Time is Worth More Than Money

time is worth

You can count how much money you have down to the last decimal point, but the same does not go for time. Yet, people spend time more liberally than they spend money. They think twice before buying a Starbucks coffee but rarely think once before wasting their entire week wasting time.

What they don’t know is that time is more valuable than money itself. Why? Here are some of the top reasons why.

Time is Finite

You have 24 hours a day until you die. That’s it. You can’t cultivate, buy, or earn more time. Once the hours are lost, you will never be able to get them back. The same does not apply to money. You can lose millions of dollars and still retain them in the future. You can even earn more money.

So, what you do with it is important. You can either waste time, as mentioned above or use the finite hours you have to do something productive. It can be anything from creating art, improving yourself, or changing the world. Or, just to earn more money.

Time is Priceless

Did you know that once you get rich enough, your money earns you money? On the flip side, time won’t make you more time. With every passing day, you have fewer hours on earth, and you cannot buy time.

Unlike money, you can’t deal-in something for time. You can’t sell your old guitar to earn more time, and you can’t sell your billion-dollar business to gain more time, either.

Time Creates Memories and Heals

Think back on your memories and see if the happy moments are based on money? As opposed to that, think about how many of those happy moments are based on the time that you have spent with your loved ones. Sure, money helps create a memory, but time makes it possible for you to make memories.

In the same vein, money can never heal old wounds, only time can. You might be the wealthiest person in Singapore, and yet, you can not use your money to heal yourself emotionally. Time, on the other hand, heals your wounds on its own. It lets you move on from emotionally traumatic experiences of the past.

Time Lets You Earn Money

Did you know that you not only trade your skills but also your time when you work? Think about it, your income is dependent on time. For example, the average hourly wage in Singapore is S$49. For every hour you give (along with your skills), you are paid by your employer.

So, if you don’t have time, you can’t earn money. Of course, there are some exceptions to this, like passive income. But for most individuals, they have to spend some time to make some money. This does not hold true the other way around though.

You Can’t Spend Money Without Time

Right before dying, people don’t wish for more money, they wish for more time. That’s how valuable time is. You might have millions of dollars in your bank account, but if you are to die tomorrow, all those millions will be worthless. You can’t spend money if you don’t have time.

How to Avoid Wasting Your Time

You must be wondering if time is so valuable, then how can you avoid wasting more time. If that is the case, here are the top ways you can spend your time wisely, just like your money.

Plan Your Days

One of the best ways to be efficient with your time is to plan your days. This works the same way as budgeting your money. When you know what you have to do during your next week, you can use it wisely. Start planning your days by using the various apps available for your phone.

Once you figure out how to plan your days ahead, you will see where you are wasting your time, and you will be able to reevaluate your days accordingly, so you don’t end up losing more of your time.

Don’t Procrastinate

Procrastination is hard to get rid of, but you must. It comes in all forms. People procrastinate working out, cooking, meeting their friends, working on their pet projects, et al. Avoid doing that. The three ways to get rid of procrastination are:

First, if you procrastinate a lot regarding minor chores, then set a rule for yourself. If that task takes less than five minutes to do, you should do it right then and there.

Two, commit. For longer tasks, if you find yourself procrastinating, then just start doing it. You might think you are not in the mood or are too tired, but mostly, it is not true. Even if you start doing the task for 5 minutes, you will be able to gain momentum and continue doing it for hours.

Three, track your progress. Generally, it takes 19-21 days for you to form new habits. So, track your progress. There are many habit tracking apps that you can use to do so. Jot down how you managed to avoid procrastination. Before you know it, you will be completely free of it.

Don’t Worry About Things Out of Your Control

Worrying can be time-consuming. What’s worse, it can be bad for your mental health, too. Worrying does not help you, but it is an entirely natural human emotion. To deal with it, you can either distract yourself or come to terms with it. A good rule of thumb is that if you can’t fix the problem in five minutes, you should not worry about it. Instead, you should start working on how you can fix it.

All the above points make sense, but being time-obsessed can be bad for your health too. Once in a while, it is entirely okay to give yourself some time to relax and do nothing.

Now that you know, time is more valuable than money, how are you planning to spend your time?
